Climbers’ Social and Festival Kickoff at Duluth Folk School: 7 pm till 10 pm.
Meet up on Friday evening at the spanking new Duluth Folk School main campus as we kick off the weekend. This is an awesome new facility located just a block from the Bent Paddle brewery (BP’s tap room is unavailable this year, as it is being moved to its new venue). At the Folk School we’ll be offering free “boot/crampon fitting & tool sharpening” clinics on the hour (bring your own file!), along with great opportunities for socializing and getting the latest information about the Quarry fest on Saturday. We encourage Saturday clinic participants to show up and get fitted for rental gear on this night, which will allow more time for climbing on Saturday. There’s no food available at the Folk School, but you are encouraged to bring it in; a number of tasty takeout/delivery food options are available in the Craft District, and BYOB!

Climbing at Casket Quarry (map and parking instructions here): The quarry’s ice and mixed routes are renowned for their steepness and technical quality. Many of the finest mixed routes are equipped. We’ll also have top-ropes hung on selected plum (and plumb!) lines. And don’t forget to take loads of photos! Your pictures may end up being featured as part of next year’s festival!
Daytime Clinics: Clinics are held at Casket Quarry in Quarry Park. Follow the links for clinic descriptions and registration. Note: the Intermediate Mixed/Ice Clinic is offered at two different times. Contact us with any questions regarding clinics; we’ll be happy to help point you toward the clinic that will suit you best.
Activities For Non-climbers: In addition to climbing, Quarry Park is an ideal location for other forms of winter recreation. The College of St. Scholastica Outdoor PURSUITS! team will be back again with a rack of fat-tire bikes, there are new trails to explore on foot or with snowshoes, plus we’ll have a campfire observation area for sipping hot drinks, roasting bacon, and with front row seating for watching climbers in action. This is a park for all users and a community festival, everyone is welcome! Bring a frisbee, the quarry’s new disc-golf course is now up and running! Note: this is now a city park; dogs are welcome but must be leashed!
Saturday Evening Activities and Presentations: Saturday evening festivities will be held at the new Lyric Conference Center in downtown Duluth (located in the Holiday Inn complex; at the event on Saturday night we’ll be handing out passes for free parking in the Holiday Inn ramp).
Doors open at 6 pm for socializing and cocktails. Evening presentations begin at 7 pm and will include a screening of the new Mixtress film highlighting cutting-edge female mixed climbers, as well as an update on ice farming and other developments, past, present, and future, at Quarry Park. Our featured presenters are ace Colorado ice and mixed climbers Beth Goralski and David Roetzel. All presentations are free and open to the public. Gear drawings throughout the evening until we wrap at 10 pm!
