Flock to the Rock 2018 is in the record books, and this year’s event hit a number of high marks! Over 200 people, including approximately 150 inspiring kids, braved record heat (dew point over 70!) to spend the day climbing at Ely’s Peak. Despite the steamy conditions there were happy whoops and smiles aplenty. New this year was an in-tunnel slide show sporting a trippy 3-D effect as climbing images were projected on the lumpy rock, and Adam Dailey powered through the humidity to thrill the crowd with an inspiring send of his cutting edge dry tooling climbs on the tunnel ceiling. Our profound thanks go out to our sponsors, including Duluth’s local climbing service providers (Vertical Endeavors and UMD’s Rec Sports Outdoor Program), CSS’s Outdoor Pursuits program for providing fat bikes, SuperOne Foods for the hotdogs, chips, granola bars and water (of which every crumb and drop was consumed up at the crag), and Juice Pharm for their tasty concoctions in the parking area. And thanks to our amazing volunteers, including representatives of the North Shore VertiGals, who fitted gear and belayed their hearts out. Let’s all do it again next year—minus the muggy weather!
