Midsummer Adventure at Ely’s Peak: Flock to the Rock 2019 Recap

July 15, 2019 Leave your thoughts

The DCC’s fifth annual Flock to the Rock event was, once again, an awesome opportunity for folks of all climbing abilities to battle the basalt under flawless July skies. Scores of kids, families, and others got an opportunity to gear up and experience climbing at Duluth’s premier summer crag free-of-charge, thanks to local climbing providers Vertical Endeavors, University of Minnesota Duluth’s RSOP, and the College of St. Scholastica’s Outdoor Pursuits program. Between climbs, YMCA Camp Miller was on hand with a fleet of mountain bikes for tours along the DWP section of the Duluth Traverse. DCC board members coordinated the event, provided a free grilled lunch, and guided experienced climbers to advanced climbs on Ely’s Peak’s Northwestern Bluff. It was a truly diverse celebration of community climbing that got more than a few folks (including many kids) stoked and hungry for future climbing adventure in the out-of-doors. Our sincere thanks to all who came out, including the DCC volunteers who worked all day fitting gear and belaying. Thanks to our event sponsors Duluth’s Wilderness Wellness Chiropractic, Wisconsin’s Camp Nebagamon, and SuperOne Foods for the generous support and donations that made this event possible. Last but not least, thanks to photographer Hansi Johnson, who regularly lends his skills to document the event, as highlighted in the following gallery:
